한국 교회건축 100년의 역사에서 매우 중요한 역할을 하였던 2인의 외국인 성직자 건축가에 대한 개인적 자료와 그들의 작품에 대한 실증적인 조사를 통해 그들의 작품과 설계개념, 교회건축의 이념과 신학적 원칙을 밝혔다. 1890년대에 활동한 파리외방전교회 소속의 프랑스인 신부 코스트(Coste)는 약현성당(1892), 명동성당(1898) 등의 고딕 지향적인 서양식 교회건축을 최초로 이식하여 한국 교회건축의 기틀을 다졌으며, 1960년대와 1970년대에 활동한 배네딕토수도회 소속의 독일인 신부 알빈(Alwin)은 근대 교회건축의 새로운 경향을 소개하고 이를 한국의 상황에 적합화시켜 카톨릭 교회건축의 근대화에 큰 업적을 남겼다. 두사람의 활동의 각기 한국 교회건축양식의 수용과 변천의 주동으로서 평가될 수 있을 것이다. |

This article deals with the two foreign priest architects, who designed many Catholic churchs in Korea. One is Rev, Coste, Eugene Jean George M.E.P(1842-1896), who had designed Yakhyon church (1892) and Myeong Dong cathedral(1898) and 3 religious buildings. The other architect is Rev. Alwin Schmid O.S.B. (1904-1978), who had designed 79 churchs, 30 secondary stations, 14 chapels and 52 common buildings for 17 years(1961-1978).In this article their lives and works are inquired and their ideas of church architecture are researched.And their roles on the history of Korean church architecture and evaluated. |
