Glenn Murcutt’s design philosophy, ‘Touch the Earth Lightly,’ underscores a commitment to minimalintervention, environmental symbiosis, and a profound reverence for the natural landscape. This study seeks toreconceptualise this philosophy into the ‘Ethical Place Memory’ concept, which broadens the understanding ofsustainability to include dimensions of cultural continuity, historical resonance, and ethical stewardship. The researchcritically examines Murcutt’s seminal works, covering residential and public projects, and distils six foundationalelements: history, culture, climate, site, experience, and program. These elements elucidate how his architecturaldesigns engage with their respective locales in ways that transcend technical efficiency, establishing a deeper dialoguewith place. The study develops a conceptual framework anchored in Murcutt’s architectural lexicon through primarysources, critical analyses, and inductive reasoning. The proposition of ‘Ethical Place Memory’ is not intended as auniversal doctrine but rather as a design ethic intricately tailored to specific contextual realities. It addresses culturalerasure and ecological neglect in modern architecture, promoting a memory-driven, place-responsive approach. Thisperspective views architecture as fostering continuity and enhancing ecological and social well-being. Furthermore, theresearch explores the applicability of this concept beyond the Australian context, particularly within densely populatedor culturally hybrid environments. By illustrating the adaptability and depth of Murcutt’s design philosophy, this studyposits that ‘Ethical Place Memory’ presents a novel paradigm for ethical design practices within a globalisedarchitectural discourse. |
