The purpose of this study is to understand the historical context of the formation of the current Euljiro region by revealingthe spatial characteristics of Seoul during the Japanese colonial period, and to reconsider the perception of dividing the spatial structureof Seoul during the Japanese colonial period into Bukchon and Namchon. The characteristics of Euljiro during the Japanese colonialperiod, which were analyzed using population and land information, are summarized as follows. First, Euljiro was a space that exhibiteda diverse range of characteristics for each legal building or section. Second, Euljiro, geographically located between Jongno andBonjeong, was a space with the character of a middle zone that was influenced by both sides, the Bukchon with the predominanceof the Koreans and the Namchon with the dominance of the Japanese. Through this study, it can be seen that there is a clearlimit to the perception of Seoul during Japanese colonial period by dividing it into a Bukchon of the Koreans and a Namchon ofthe Japanese. This indicates that Euljiro provides an important clue to reveal the diversity of urban spaces in Seoul during Japanesecolonial period. |
