(Background and Purpose) The COVID-19 Pandemic has influenced our daily living, and the studio practice in architectural education, which has been used for a long time, has had to change its pedagogical method to online. For this, many universities attempt new educational methods, using the metaverse environment in their architecture design studio. The purpose of this paper explores the possibility of a new educational method for the architecture design studio by analyzing architectural design studio cases using the metaverse environment. Thus, this study investigates various programmes for architectural design using the metaverse, and discuss new directions for architectural education through examples of domestic and international studio-based architectural education using the metaverse. (Method) The research methods of this study is as follows. Firstly, it examines representative elements of architectural design studios in traditional education to explore students¡¯ practice and educational methods according to each stage of the design process in the studio. Secondly, it investigates the concept and various characteristics of metaverse environments through a literature review and prior research to understand the current status of metaverse in the educational field. Thirdly, it focuses on various cases of architecture design studios in both domestic and foreign universities using metaverse platforms to analyze the characteristics of each metaverse environment and educational method used at each stage of the design process. For this, this paper is meaningful because it presents a primary direction for studio-based architectural education that actively utilizes the metaverse environment. (Results) This paper investigates the educational method of architecture design studios using the metaverse environment through case analysis, and summarized as follows. Firstly, the Metaverse environment can be accessed without physical restrictions, and various reviewers as well as instructors and students can participate and collect their opinions. Secondly, the game platform provides environments where all design processes are carried out in an online space, and it also provides immediate modifications through real-time feedback. Thirdly, VR, AR can be used to evaluate the results in the later stages of design or for presentation purposes, and it has been confirmed. They can play a role in enhancing students' understanding of space by providing an immersive experience of augmented reality. (Conclusions) This paper explores the possibility of a new educational method for architectural design studios by analyzing case studies using the metaverse environment. In the future, additional research is necessary to further analyze and compare the educational methods and usage programs used by various design studios. |
