¿ä¾à2 (Background and Purpose) We recognize the surroundings and perceive objects through light, and light can be seen as one of the components that give images to architecture. Light is closely related to space, structure, shape, material, etc., and gives an image of architecture and influences the atmosphere of the architectural space. Since the past, light has been actively used in architectural spaces, playing a role not only in illuminating the space but also in influencing the spatial atmosphere. However, after the introduction of artificial light in modern society, it has become accustomed to an environment in which insufficient light is filled with artificial light and lacks the value of light. To restore the value of light, this study aims to analyze Peter Zumthor's architecture that uses light in space to express the user's experience and atmosphere and to find out the spatial composition method that he used to implement light in the space. (Method) This study analyzes architectural concepts and characteristics through literature research, focusing on the expression method of light used by Peter Zumthor to build light. In addition, the construction characteristics of his light are identified after analyzing the drawing, floor plan, threshold, and construction methods, which are important elements in his expression of light. Among his architectural works, five buildings(Kunsthaus Bregenz, Therme Vals, Swiss Sound Pavilion, Kolumba Art Museum, and Bruder Klaus Field Chapel) were selected to find out how light is expressed through floor plan and drawings and to analyze how light is implemented by identifying thresholds and construction methods that directly accept light within the space. (Results) As a result, it was found that Peter Zumthor established a design concept from the region, use, and user experience at the beginning of the design and implemented a space with an appropriate atmosphere. Additionally, when expressing light, he imaged a space suitable for the user's experience and atmosphere. Then he implemented it through drawing and floor plan, and it was understood that the user's experience of the space inside was maximized by constructing a space through an appropriate threshold and construction method to realize light. (Conclusions) Peter Zumthor considers light as part of the space and values the user's experience and memory within the space, and it can be seen that the space is implemented by selecting suitable thresholds and construction methods to implement light. Therefore, the value of this paper is that it revives the essential value of light lacking in modern architecture and seeks to help users understand the implementation of light.
