(Background and Purpose) In recent times, there has been a growing interest in expansion and remodeling as effective solutions to address the aging of buildings constructed after the 1960s. Despite this, there remains a lack of research and standards that specifically address the addition and remodeling of modern buildings with relatively low historical value. As a result, this study aims to address this issue by providing guidance on preserving the value of modern buildings and preventing the indiscriminate expansion and remodeling of such structures. The study focuses on an art museum that serves as a cultural center in the local area, with the specific objective of confirming the feasibility of adding and remodeling this building while maintaining its value and significance. (Method) In Chapter 2, theoretical discussions define the concepts of addition and remodeling, and analyze previous studies and domestic and international cases to derive planning directions for application to the design. Based on this, the study establishes planning directions for expansion and remodeling that preserve the value of existing buildings through 1) continuity that respects the spatial principles of existing buildings, 2) place-based design that respects the surrounding context, and 3) program restructuring centered on current demands. (Results) The Arko Art Museum, located in Jongno-gu, Seoul, serves as the main subject of the study's design proposals. The study aims to maintain the continuity of the existing spatial principles of the building through an expansion plan that takes into account the original structure's design elements. Furthermore, the study seeks to incorporate sustainable and symbolic elements into the design process by using the same brick material as the original building to honor the museum's location and context. Additionally, the study aims to meet the diverse demands of society by restructuring the museum's program to better reflect current needs. Lastly, the study proposes an energy-efficient system that will enable the museum to operate sustainably while minimizing environmental impact. Overall, the study presents a holistic approach to expansion and remodeling that balances preservation and innovation. (Conclusion) Through the expansion and remodeling design of an art museum that serves as a community-centered space in modern society, this study presents planning directions and design proposals for the Arko Art Museum. This study was expanded and remodeled as an art museum that can accommodate the social and cultural needs of the local community. Accordingly, as a study to preserve the value and place of modern architectures, it is intended to provide value and significance to program proposals that meet the needs of the future era. |
