(Background and purpose) Squares are centers of urban public spaces and cultural activities. The most important condition for squares is accessibility, and accessibility measurement is based on time and distance. This study introduced the concept of geographic accessibility to identify resistance factors from the perspective of overcoming resistance from the starting point to the destination. Based on this, the study aimed to explore the practical utility of GIS models by comparing the accessibility values measured by such models with those measured by on-site surveys, and to evaluate the accessibility of Magok Square. (Methods) Previous studies on the concepts of accessibility, research methods, and resistance factors of spatial accessibility were reviewed. Second, indices with high utilization frequency and quantitative evaluation were derived, and the measurement indices were set through a review of previous studies in Korea and abroad. Then, a GIS database was established and the accessibility index was calculated. Third, a research target was selected within a certain service range near Magok Square and on-site surveys were conducted. Finally, because the measurement units were different, the GIS model-measured accessibility values and actual measured accessibility values were compared and analyzed by converting them for normalization. (Results) First, it was confirmed that the accessibility values measured by the GIS model corresponded to the actual measured accessibility values within a service radius of 600 m, indicating that the model reflected actual accessibility. Second, the accessibility values measured by the GIS model and the actual measured accessibility values were opposite within a service radius of 600?1,000 m. Therefore, it was confirmed that the GIS model did not reflect actual accessibility in this service radius range. Third, the accessibility of Magok Square was found to be low, as it was measured to be 0.66 or less based on the GIS model results. (Conclusions) It was confirmed that the accessibility results measured by the GIS model partially reflected actual accessibility. More reliable results could be obtained by setting the values of the resistance factors of accessibility based on actual situations at a certain time of day. Additionally, considering that public transportation requires more time than walking, accessibility to squares can be improved by optimizing public transportation networks, establishing reasonable urban transportation planning and management policies, and introducing smart transportation systems. As this study only considered the physical aspects of accessibility, future research on the psychological aspects of accessibility is expected to provide more comprehensive improvement measures. |
