(Background and Purpose) South Korea has recently undergone an active push to recycle neglected idle industrial facilities, following the trend of changing industrial structures into commercial facilities, such as complex cultural spaces. When redeveloping these facilities, it is necessary to consider the existing structures and equipment, and it is very important to set an appropriate direction for regenerative architecture by considering the purpose of the architecture. This study looks at successful cases of transforming industrial facilities into cultural spaces and proposes a strategic design direction for these spaces in South Korea. For these, it examines the components of a cultural space, the concept of regenerative architecture, and previous studies on regenerative architectural design. (Method) After selecting four case papers suitable for the purpose of this study, it was analyzed in three spatial aspects considering the results of the previous study and the purpose of the building called a complex cultural space. In other words, three criteria of analysis were applied: how to organize a complex cultural space that was created from regenerative architecture, what types of preservation and fusion were used for the historical preservation of the old architecture, and what design characteristics appeared in the newly created space. (Results) First, the composition of complex cultural spaces attempted the division and integration of space based on openness and variability, and increased interactivity to induce participation from users. Secondly, the cases preserved the structures and finishing materials of the old buildings considerably and made use of the old equipment and machines as interior designs to add storytelling elements, thus reinforcing their temporality and historical symbolism. Finally, a structure of a new form was transplanted or connected to the old building for creating a new space, or a new space was overlapped with the old one to emphasize the harmony of organic connection as well as the overlapping of the old and present spaces. (Conclusions) These findings raise a need to clearly distinguish the values of old buildings that should be preserved and the ones that will be renovated in the construction of complex cultural spaces based on regenerative architecture. It is especially necessary to combine such a project with architectural design in the direction of ensuring its symbolism as a local landmark through the active preservation of its archetype and connect it through storytelling to provide users with experiential elements based on the co-existence of the past and present. This should be reinforced by variable spatial design to accommodate various culture and art programs and hold events while taking the preservation and history of regenerative architecture into consideration. |
