(Background and Purpose) South Korea is the fastest country to become a super-aged society, and depression among older adults has emerged as a social problem. As leisure activities can address this issue, and there are multiple leisure activity facilities for older adults, such as welfare and senior centers. However, these are insufficient to meet older adults¡¯ needs as they desire more dynamic leisure activities. Although, parks are outdoor places where they can perform both physical and social activities, few prior studies examined how parks as leisure activity spaces affect elder people from the design perspective. This study aims to reveal how older adults¡¯ park usage conditions affect their place attachment and propose a plan for their effective park use by identifying priorities of the factors for park design. (Method) Solbat Park in Ui-dong, Gangbuk-gu, Seoul, was selected as the target region, and elderly users in it were surveyed for data collection. Models of place identity, place dependence, and place embeddedness were developed by assuming that the outcome variables¡¯ characteristics differ based on explanatory variables. Then, through an analysis of variance, each model¡¯s variables were examined. The most explanatory research model was selected through goodness-of-fit testing, and factors that affect place attachment and design impact were identified through multiple regression analysis. (Results) Regarding results, staying time significantly affected place attachment in the place identity and dependence models, and staying time and meetings significantly affected place attachment in the place embeddedness model, which showed the highest explanatory power. Meetings exhibited greater influence on place attachment than staying time. Therefore, staying time significantly affected all three place attachment variables: identity, dependence, and embeddedness. (Conclusions) This study examined how older adults¡¯ park usage conditions significantly affected their place attachment by statistically analyzing the data. It verified that older adults form emotional fellowships in parks?public spaces they can access easily?by staying in parks and meeting other people. This study is significant because it provides basic data for park planning by exploring factors enabling older adults to use parks more effectively and introduces quantitative methods to derive factors for spatial design. The limitations are that, first, this exploratory research targeted a specific park. As its users cannot represent all elder people in South Korea, further research should target several parks and generalize results. Second, this study was limited to quantitative research. For more complete research results, detailed exploration of users' behavior and qualitative research on psychological factors in parks should be conducted in the future. |
