¿ä¾à2 (Background and Purpose) Today, in the process of large-scale development and expansion of the city, historical memories are lost, and regional characters of cities are blurred. Historic and cultural districts are evidences of urban development and receptors for urban memories. In the process of designing historical and cultural space, the regeneration design of historical and cultural space that revitalize districts while conserving memories of the place has an important meaning. Therefore, this study aims at presenting directions for the regeneration design by analyzing historical and cultural district cases having place memories. (Method) This study was analyzed eight cases of representative regeneration design of historical and cultural districts in China and Korea from the view of a historical, cultural and spatial perspective based on place memory. The framework of case analysis was derived from literature review. The following target group interviews were conducted on the regeneration design value of each case with 30 experts of spatial design fields in China and Korea. For data analysis, the SPSS ver.26 statistical program was used. The values and future directions of regeneration design of the historical and cultural space were suggested accordingly. (Results) The framework of case analysis was proposed, including the regenerative characteristics of historical and cultural spaces based on place memory, the expressive characteristics of historical and cultural spaces and the regeneration value of historical and cultural districts. In addition, as to the result of FGI analysis, regeneration design of the historical and cultural space had salient characteristics of contextual regeneration and visible spatial expression among physical factors, but regional symbolism was somewhat insufficient. In terms of the regeneration value, the economic value was evaluated highly in most cases and there were differences in the remaining values case by case. The environmental value of the case in China was evaluated highly while the historical value of the case in Korea. For the future regeneration design, it is necessary to review and utilize the economic, historical, and social regeneration values of Kuanzhai Alley, the economic regeneration value of Insa-dong, and the historical and cultural¡¤artistic regeneration value of Eunhaeng-ro in Hanok Village. The results of this study could be utilized when a particular space is designed or evaluated in relation to place memory. (Conclusions) In the future, considering the role and impact of space in the city, the regeneration design of historical and cultural spaces needs to integrate regional-specific elements in terms of the five aspects of the regeneration value: economic, historical, environmental, cultural and artistic, and social. The use of place memory elements will be a strategy for efficient regeneration design and can contribute to the sustainable development of the city.
