(Background and Purpose) Consumer awareness about environmental protection is increasing nowadays, and suppliers are making efforts to manufacture eco-friendly products. Upcycling, which creates new products by adding value to discarded products, is being applied to various fields such as goods, furniture, fashion, and space with various ideas and designs. Space upcycling is the process of reusing buildings or spaces that have been underutilized as areas with new functions and uses while maintaining their original appearance and identity. In developed countries such as Europe, many industrial facilities that have been neglected for a long time are being used as museums or cultural facilities. This study examines the maturity level of upcycling in spatial design through the analysis of overseas upcycling application cases and analyzes domestic upcycling cases to examine differences and major success factors. Furthermore, by analyzing the application status of domestic space upcycling, this study aims to suggest the direction that domestic upcycling should pursue in the future. (Method) Europe, the US, and China started upcycling early. Success factors, such as value analysis and characteristics of design, for upcycling of famous overseas spaces were found, and how they could be reflected in domestic space upcycling was reviewed. Additionally, success factors were assessed for representative cases to be successful in Korea, and it was clarified whether overseas and domestic have the same factors. The analysis period for overseas space upcycling was from the 1990s onward when foreign countries began looking for ways to utilize industrial facilities that had been neglected for a long time due to changes in the industrial structure. In the case of Korea, the 2000s, when upcycling of public facilities began, was selected. (Results) As for the success factors examined through case analysis studies of domestic and oversea space upcycling, it was found that design that citizens sympathize with, storytelling in connection with the historicity of the building, and the development of continuous and expandable content are all important. With regard to other factors in the case of overseas, there was a tendency to expand to the entire space of the local community rather than to individual spaces to carry out upcycling. Therefore, it is necessary to expand the development direction of domestic upcycling to cities or local communities and to expand and develop upcycling from public facilities to individual commercial facilities. (Conclusions) Although domestic upcycling is less common than overseas upcycling, the difference is not large. It can be seen that patience, along with government policy support, active participation of citizens, and active businesses, is required for successful space upcycling. Further, it will be possible to have a competitive edge in space upcycling with interest and effort in the design field. |
