This dissertation analyzed the international competition of design guidelines for the Helsinki Central Library as well as core goals of the library policy of Finland, and spatial design of Helsinki Central Library that specifically realized such goal with focus on each contents relationship for the purpose of methodological review of the spatial design to appropriately cope with the social roles and functions newly required of public libraries in the current era. Characteristics of spatial design method of Helsinki Central Library based on the results of analysis can be summarized as follows. (1) Characteristics of spatial design method for ¡®information democratization¡¯ were found to include accessibility to increase locational and temporal accessibility, inclusivity capable of more broadly accommodating the diversified situations of users and diversity to cope with the diversification of the attributes of library users. (2) Characteristics of spatial design method for ¡®service expansion¡¯ were found to include accessibility to enhance the accessibility from the cognitive perspective in the format of accessing library in the daily life zones, openness to strengthen the physical openness of space, interactivity to pursue improvement in the level of participation through enhancement of relationship among the users of the space and connectivity that seeks continuous participation in activities by connecting the space and users with a single integrate framework. (3) Characteristics of spatial design method for ¡®expansion of community¡¯ have the most complex characteristics with simultaneous manifestation of design characteristics including interactivity and connectivity aimed at expansion of opportunities for interaction and communication by establishing close relationship among the users of the space, inclusivity of not being limited to a single functional finality for the purpose of formation of diversified library communities and, in particular, flexibility and diversity from the spatial and facility perspectives. |
