(Background and Purpose) As the number of the elderly and single-person households increases along with the country¡¯s low birthrate and aging population, psychological loneliness and emotional isolation are emerging as social issues. In response, the number of people who have companion animals in Korea has recently increased significantly. In Japan, housing for elders who have pets is emerging, and there are more elderly care facilities where residents can keep their pets. This study aims to analyze the characteristics of management, service, and spatial planning of care facilities in Japan, which is the fastest aging nation in the world. Accordingly, this study presents basic spatial design guidelines for companion animal-friendly elderly care facilities. (Methods) For the purpose of this study, content analysis was conducted on the relevant prior research literature and secondary data published on the websites of case facilities. To select the case sites, an online search was conducted in three steps, and six sites were finally selected where information in terms of facility operation management, service, and space planning was provided relatively faithfully. To secure the validity of the analysis, an objective analysis framework was derived based on the contents of the previous research literature. (Results) The selected case facilities were systematically operated and included a pet policy. In terms of service, in addition to basic services such as convenience and medical care, additional paid services were provided for the pet option. To understand the spatial planning characteristics, the indoor and outdoor personal spaces, public spaces, and service spaces were investigated based on the analysis framework. As a result, six design characteristics (sociality, healthiness, safety, convenience, manageability, controllability) were established for each space planning requirement (space composition, space size, spatial flow, equipment system, finishing material, fence and opening, furniture, etc.). (Conclusion) As basic data, the results of this study can be developed and applied in a positive direction in the future, while presenting the applicable operational management regulations, service characteristics, and basic requirements for spatial planning for desirable coexistence with companion animals in spatial planning, including elderly care facilities in which residents can be accompanied by their companion animals. |
