도서관은 우리 삶의 일부로 긴 역사를 함께해 온 시설로서 도시의 지형 안에서 특별한 위치를 점하고 있다. 소통적 시설이자 사회적 인프라로서 도서관은 주목할 만한 의미를 지닌다. 도시의 거실로서 다양한 역할을 수용하며 변화와 혁신을 거듭하고 있는 도서관을 이처럼 특별한 일상적 시설로 만든 영감은 무엇인지 그 원형에 대해 살펴보고자 한다. 루이스 칸은 형태와 디자인이라는 개념을 통해 시설의 근원에 대해 일생을 탐구하였다. 시설의 본질인 기저에 존재하는 영감을 통해서만 진정한 혁신이 가능하다고 믿었다. 불레는 도서관 계획안에서 장대한 공간과 지식의 전승이라는 시적인 행위를 통해 숭고한 감정을 불러일으키고자 하였다. 불레의 대담한 건축에 영향을 받은 루이스 칸은 엑서터 도서관에서 엄숙한 책의 전시를 통해 신성함을 경험케 한다. 불레가 그려낸 다음의 광경인 책을 읽는 구체적인 상황에 집중하여 개인열람석의 공간을 구성한다. 이를 통해 루이스 칸은 도서관이라는 시설의 기원에 잠재해 있는 본질인 일상적 고결함을 구현해낸다. |

The library has an extensive history that occupies a special place within a city's topography; it’s a communicative institution and social
infrastructure that is recognizably important in one’s daily life. This study examines the inspiration and original form of the library that
accommodates various roles, acts as the living room of a city, and represents an extraordinary place to experience. Louis Kahn explored the
origin of institutions throughout his life in the concept of ‘Form’ and ‘Design’. He believed that true innovation was possible only through
the inspiration that already exists in the given nature of an institution. In the Bibliotheque Nationale, Etienne-Louis Boullee tried to evoke a
sublime through the poetic act of transmitting knowledge while utilizing the grandeur of space. At the Exeter Library, influenced by Boullee's
remarkable architecture, Louis Kahn created sanctity through a solemn display of books. Focusing on the concrete situation of reading a
book, which is the next scene imagined by Boullee, the carrels were organized. Evidently, Louis Kahn embodies the ordinary nobility, which
is the latent essence situated at the origin of the institution: the library. |
