Domestic ¡®Space Design¡¯ is one of the major ¡®Design¡¯-related sub-areas where 281 articles are published and 517 researchers participate in related research on average every year. However, the existing literature to investigate the overall research trend was insufficient and the perspectives of the prior investigations were also limited. Therefore, to fill the scholarly gap and to estimate the scholarly influence of Korean ¡®Space Design¡¯, this study analyzed the citation pattern of 2,717 ¡®Space Design¡¯ articles published in three leading Korean journals (¡®Journal of Korea Institute of Spatial Design¡¯, ¡®Journal of the Korean Institute of Culture Architecture¡¯, and ¡®Korean Institute of Interior Design Journal¡¯). In specific, over 2,700 target articles were analyzed from two perspectives; one is from citation patterns of three journals, and another is from citation distributions of individual articles. As the result, among the target journals, the ¡®Journal of the Korean Institute of Culture Architecture¡¯ had a large scholarly influence in the same journal or research on ¡®Space Design¡¯, and the other two journals had an impact on a wider range of academic fields beyond ¡®Space Design.¡¯ The analysis of citation distribution of individual articles showed that 38% of all ¡®Space Design¡¯ articles were never cited as references in the four years since their publication, and 53% were cited less than five times. On the other hand, 8% of the articles were cited more than 5 times. Considering the citation distribution of the entire ¡®Space Design¡¯ articles, these 8% were outliers, which were significantly out of the ordinary citation distribution of the domestic ¡®Space Design¡¯ articles. |
