(Background and Purpose) School is a space for learning and a community with public facilities where our youth/children stay for a long time. However, the school has long remained an institution that transfers one-way knowledge in square classrooms. As a result, the school space has functioned only as efficient learning management and control until now. However, with the recent arrival of the 4th Industrial Revolution era, schools are required to avoid being uniform and fostering standardized talents but, instead, to foster creative talents who can cope with the future¡¯s uncertainty and create new things. Therefore, this study aimed to present a new type of classroom space to fit the creative future education environment by breaking away from the traditional square-shaped physical structure and analyzing the learning environment by type to foster creative human resources. This study aimed to present a flexible space platform centered on learners to foster creative talent through a new approach based on the concept of destroying the paradigm of the existing classroom space itself, rather than changing the level or replacing or remodeling obsolete materials and finishing. (Methods) To nurture creative and convergent talents who will lead a rapidly changing future in accordance with the 4th Industrial Revolution, many educational institutions provide various methods based on the 4Cs (Creativity, Critical Thinking, Collaboration, Communication). Such creative and convergence education has led schools to change their classroom spaces and educational programs. This study therefore sought to determine the classroom environment and methods that could provide the 4Cs through various advanced future classrooms abroad and to establish a prototype of the future classroom space centered on learners. This study proposed a flexible future classroom platform centered on learners by researching the spatial structure and function of a learning space that enables customized cooperative individual learning through systematic integration of advanced technologies and the free exchange of information. (Results) First, this study applied a non-oriented honeycomb structure module to realize a classroom environment centered on communication and cooperation, breaking away from the existing square space centered on knowledge transfer. Second, we planned an expandable layout that could be organically connected and separated according to use and function through the honeycomb-structured module. Third, we established a system that allowed for the merging and separation of classrooms for various types of classroom activities of creative and convergence education and learning (4Cs) for teachers and students and planned modular furniture and equipment that could be arranged and combined freely to create a multi-use space with a flexible class environment centered on learners. (Conclusion) This study may serve as a guideline for breaking away from the existing classroom space paradigm and innovating the existing uniform, prison-like school space. |
