According to Fujimoto, ideal architecture describes a space where the boundaries between the interior and the exterior are ambiguous, establishing a relationship with the surrounding environment. Therefore, he focuses on inducing the impression that the boundary of the building is perceived imperfectly and that something can be interposed. The imperfection he refers to here allows users to recognize the boundaries vaguely but without forfeiting the basic function of the building. This study aims to clarify the characteristics of boundary perception revealed in Fujimoto¡¯s works to understand the principle of ¡°architecture that makes a relationship,¡± rather than simply analyzing the superficial features by categorizing his works. To this end, we analyzed the cognitive characteristics of perceiving boundaries vaguely and selected three examples representative of Fujimoto¡¯s residential works to reveal how he used them to blur the boundaries. Through this, it was recognized that the boundary itself is conventional, explicit, and absolute but can be perceived as creative, complex, and relative in users¡¯ cognitive process. Using these characteristics, it was confirmed that Fujimoto impinged on users¡¯ cognitive process through ¨ç the presentation of a new order, ¨è the compounding of the single, and ¨é the relativization of the absolute. Through this study, we hope to extend the boundary of space to the cognitive characteristics of humans who experience it, rather than limiting it to architectural elements. |
