In the new era of Big Data, the sociocultural roles of a museum are expanding as the center of cultural information based on its collections. As the museum has been building and sharing the collection database, the sociocultural needs of museum open storage are increasing with the discussion on public accessibility to museum collections. Some Korean national museums have built or planned their open storages, but these museums have had a hard time considering the operation and spatial design of the open storages due to the lack of the related researches. Thus, the main purpose of this study is to present the design directions of museum open storage space in Korea through the case study of oversea museum open storages in order to develope the spatial design tendencies, based on open storage typology in relation to the visiting motivations of museum audience. To do so, first museum open storage typology divided into three types, including viewing-focused open storage for exhibition viewers, experience-focused for education participants and research-focused for scholarly researchers by carrying out a literature review. After then, the case study was conducted on the basis of open storage typology. Newly-opened museum open storages located in the major or neighboring cities of the British, France and Belgium, English-speaking countries, were selected as the proper cases. Through the case analysis, it is founded that these museums have reinforced publicness and made a progress to be audience-centered as they integrated and converged exhibition, education, and research areas with storage to utilize the open storages and that a museum placed open storages converging 2-3 types, or distributed 2-3 type to various places in order to maximize the public accessibility to museum collections. This study is valued as a fundamental research of museum open storage focused on physical accessibility of museum audience. |
