The main purpose of this paper is to interpret the ambivalence of the two opposites of consumer society and avant-garde. This study is not aimed at categorizing the architectural characteristics that appear in contemporary architecture, but at interpreting the mutual operating principle of capitalism and the art. It will serve as an opportunity to understand the contradictory capriciousness that is persistently found in contemporary architecture. Based on an era of everyday life in which personal tastes converge as a new cultural capital element and the paradigm of production and consumption repeats reversal, the premise of study is that architecture adopts the same strategy as that of modern art to be an high culture. Therefore, it is identified that the meaning of architecture is becoming more enticing to desire and consumption from the logic of architecture itself and the theoretical genealogy of architecture in which the avant-garde is repeated in various forms. Also, it is found that Duchamp's inframince, which overcome the standard of classical value judgment, could be an important reference. As a result, the following two characteristics can be found. The first is that the simple form of minimal architecture is subject to aesthetic evaluation of the audience by expressing restrained sophistication and potential unexpectedness. The other one is that the spectacle architecture shares code with individuals by combining with consumption symbols and embracing modern art. In conclusion, architecture, by becoming re-aesthetics, is appealing individual sensibilities and pursuing higher social status. The ambivalence of opposing properties of various modern contemporary architecture does not mean firm boundary, but expresses the particularity and incompatibility of individuals in the consumer society. |
