Recently, with the change of its social roles, it has increased the importance of museum public space in reinforcing the publicness.? International leading museums have tried to expand the public area in renovating atrium space to increase the attraction effect and stay time. This paper focus on the museum atrium space and analyze its characteristics. Thus, the purposes of the paper is to suggest the design direction for museum atrium space. In order to develop the characteristics of museum atrium space for the reinforcement of publicness, the references and the previous studies are reviewed. In doing it, the frame work for case studies, including openness, accessibility, connectivity and? placeness, is dedused. In analizing the cases of museum atrium space, the study found that museum atrium space provide interior-spaceized urban open space like exterior space , covered by trensparent materials and expanded by visual access to the nature in order to support the rest and amenity for the public in the openness. Also, it makes the public easy access to the museum space, located in the entrance space in accessibility. In addition it roles the hub of museum to link the main spaces, located in the central area in connectivity. Finally, it is a flexible space for multi-purposes to serve the cultural activities for many people in placeness. |
