간판건축은 1975년 후지모리 테루노부에 의해 발견되고 명명되었다. 간판건축은 1923년 관동대지진 이후 그 피해를 복구하는 과정에서 도시 주변부 상점가에 세워진 상가주택이다. 전통적 목조건축 마치야의 정면에 서양식 외벽을 붙였다. 간판건축은 1930-40년대 도시 가로경관 형성에 중요한 역할을 담당하였다. 간판건축 성립의 배경에는 관동대지진과 함께 1919년 시가지건축물법에 명시된 건축선 제한과 방화벽 규정의 영향이 있었다. 간판건축 정면 외벽에는 방화대책의 일환으로 동판, 모르타르, 타일, 슬레이트 등의 불연재가 사용되었다. 간판건축이라는 용어가 학계에 자리를 뿌리를 내리기까지는 후지모리와 함께, 그의 스승인 무라마츠 테이지로의 노력이 있었다. 일제강점기를 거치면서 간판건축은 한국 구도심에도 세워졌다. 예를 들어, 대구 북성로, 목포 근대역사문화공간 일대에서 간판건축을 발견할 수 있다. 도로선과 처마선, 용마루가 평행을 이루는 평입의 전기 형식이 주로 나타나지만, 박공면으로 진입하는 후기 간판건축 형식도 함께 존재한다. 상업자본에 의한 개발의 압력 속에서 일본 간판건축은 이축, 리노베이션, 도시재생 등을 통해 보존과 활용이 이루어지고 있다. 그러나, 한국의 간판건축은 그 존재조차 제대로 알려져 있지 않다. 근대건축문화유산으로서 적산가옥(敵産家屋)에 대한 관심은 점점 높아지고 있지만, 간판건축은 소리 없이 사라지고 있다. 민중의 계보를 잇는 “제2차 의양풍 건축”이라고 일컬어지는 간판건축은 “장식된 헛간”으로서 20세기 “건축가 없는 건축”의 속성을 갖는다. 콘 와지로의 고현학에서부터 후지모리의 건축탐정단을 거쳐, 노상관찰학회 활동으로 이어지는 필드워크의 계보는 이러한 저잣거리 B급 건축에 주목했다. 간판건축의 발견은 고현학에 토대를 둔 건축탐정단의 활동이 있었기에 가능했다. |

This paper was designed to answer these three questions: First, what is billboard architecture? Second, is billboard architecture found in old downtowns built during the Japanese colonial period? Third, what significance dose billboard architecture have in the history of architecture? Billboard architecture was discovered and named by Fujimori Terunobu, an architectural historian, in 1975. Billboard architecture refers to commercial houses built in a shopping district after the Great Kanto Earthquake in 1923 with a Western-style exterior wall attached onto the facade of Machiya, the traditional wood frame house. Billboard architecture was built in old downtowns around Korea during the Japanese colonial period. Its good examples can be found in Buksungro of Daegu and Mokpo. Built by the hands of ordinary people, billboard architecture has the nature as a "Decorated Shed" and "Architecture without Architects" in the 20th century. Today, even the existence of billboard architecture is not known whereas there is growing interest in former Japanese-owned housing architecture in old downtowns. It is time to have contemplation over the investigation, preservation, and utilization of billboard architecture. |
