Purpose: This study classifies the types of spatial configurations of traditional Korean markets based on urban morphology and identifies the characteristics of such markets based on the configurations. Thereby, this study presents measures to secure the sustainability of traditional markets through which the city can manifest its identity in the urban regeneration process. Method: This study examined all 15 traditional markets in Cheongju City and classified spatial configuration types of the markets based on typology to present each type in a simple schematic. Result: The results of this study are as follows: (1) Korean traditional markets have been growing through spatial expansion with the crossing and intertwining of open streets lined with market stores. (2) In general, entries to the markets directly face or are located near large roads along which mass transportation moves, and they also contact small and medium-sized roads connected to nearby residential neighborhoods. (3) Individual stores in the market were usually of the street-facing type. Sometimes, stores were accommodated in a large building, but the number of such cases was minimal. Moreover, there were also street vendors along with customer circulation lines. Some of the vendors occupied opened streets in the market, while others occupied the sidewalk on the boundary of the market. This shows that the traditional markets have been continuously inheriting the operating method of using outdoor open spaces. (4) A typical characteristic of modernized traditional markets is the arcade structure, where streets lined with stores are covered with canopies. Furthermore, the private parking lot attached to market are required for modernized traditional markets. |
