This study aims to examine the fear of crime and investigate the actual conditions in the residential environment of a single person's households in the university town of a local small-sized city. The survey research was carried out to examine the residents' perceived importance-satisfaction and fear of crime in the residential environment. The results revealed that, first, the main type of single-person households was either detached or multi-family housing comprising of one room and 50% of respondents had been living for a year. Second, as a result of ISA, the area of bathroom or toilet, soundproofing, dampproofing and insulation (on II quadrant) were of great importance, but the residents were not completely satisfied and it was found that at the time of planning residence for single-person households, such aspects should be considered first. Also, the area of the living room or kitchen, area of drying space and parking lot (on III quadrant) exhibited a lower degree of importance and satisfaction and demanded concentration at the time of planning. Third, the fear of crime was found to be in direct proportion to insufficient lighting and CCTV at the main entrance, a security device in individual household's entrance and security window for crime prevention, unsafe surroundings, building deterioration, owner and manager's absence, and neighbor's distrust. |
