Purpose: While Korean society has been developed radically, the vulnerable population with below the housing standards, however, has increased rapidly. This study was intended to extract the needs of the Gosiwon (Flophouse) residents for small community house planning. The specific planning elements are unit space, neighborhood sizes, functional features of common spaces, and housing community layouts. Method: This research utilized user participated planning method through small group workshop. Three groups of 3 Gosiwon residents each participated in the workshop for 2 hours using visual and tangible supporting tools. Result: The participants responded to the proposed prototype unit as spacious, asked 4-15 households as the proper neighborhood size. They wanted community living space for health, welfare, and social interaction, as well as community work space for functional usages which do not require special skills. For the layout, most participants placed community living space deep inside of the housing, while community work space was outward. This research is significant that the vulnerable Gosiwon residents’ potential needs are directly recognized with their participation and consensus, therefore, the possibility of small community house is confirmed. |
