¿ä¾à2 (Background and Purpose) While the number of cancer patients is constantly increasing, existing cancer treatment facilities are still at a level of prolonging their life, and are also perceived as an abomination because of their appearance and negative image. In this context, the importance of combined healing to help the recovery of mind and body?rather than mere treatment alone?is emerging for cancer patients. Healing space refers to a space that helps the mind and body to recover through emotional and psychological stability beyond simple treatment, of which the kitchen space of Maggie's Centers is a representative example. The purpose of this study is to examine the characteristics and role of kitchen space as a healing environment based on biophilic design theory. (Method) First, we conduct a preliminary literature and internet survey for the theoretical review of the healing environment and biophilic design. We also look at Kitchenism, the core concept of the kitchen space at Maggie's Center, and select ten Maggie's Centers in order to analyze the connection with nature based on the theory of William Browning and Jenifer Seal-Cramer. On this basis, we analyze the role of kitchen space as a healing environment and study the characteristics of biophilic design as applied to the kitchen space of Maggie's Center. (Results) First, in terms of biophilic design, the characteristics of the kitchen space are mainly used for the introduction of a large amount of natural light into the room?curtains and blinds typically used for controlling the amount of light are excluded, and people feel that they are part of nature. Second, it uses wooden materials and applies natural colors to walls, furniture, and decorations to provide emotional stability and comfort. It also provides an indirect experience through similarity with nature ?rather than by introducing nature directly into the interior space?thereby enabling people to feel nature in the space. Third, it gives a feeling of being protected from the outside by viewing nature in the distance and from the cozy and comfortable space of the interior. Finally, the pattern elements of the biophilic design complement each other and function in harmony. (Conclusion) This study considered the elements of "space environment" of Kitchenism based on the human regression instinct to return to nature. It is meaningful due to its focus on space design and expression elements using the biophilic design concept rather than the social and symbolic characteristics of the Kitchenism of Maggie Center. Based on the results of this study, it is necessary to apply the case of kitchen space covered in this study to the space design methodology of various healing facilities. Moreover, study of this aspect of space design in healing facilities, as well as the coexistence, interaction, and balance of humans as part of nature is needed in the future.
