(Background and Purpose) For In contemporary society, office life is an significant factor decreasing the quality of life. This results in a reduction in work efficiency and productivity. Consequently, many companies provide a variety of welfare services to increase the work efficiency of their employees; however, these are relatively ineffective. Recently, in addition to the existing welfare measures, foreign companies have been introducing a management system that provides their employees with autonomy in selecting their physical work environment. In this study, I analyze the correlation between autonomy and increased work efficiency by establishing a definition of autonomous office and examining basic zoning method. The purpose of this study is to raise the fundamental problem of office life improvement?which most domestic companies have been unable to solve despite their various efforts?and to provide guidelines for a solution. (Method) Firstly, the correlation between autonomy and work efficiency is examined. Secondly, five floor plans of autonomous offices are analyzed to establish a basic zoning classification model of autonomous offices. Based on the case analysis, the two axes of the classification model are centered on: the axis of open-concentration, which is the contrast of environment; and the axis of individual-many, which refers to the subject of space usage. Based on this, I propose four types of zoning, namely: open-individual, open-many, concentration-individual, concentration-many. I then suggest a practical method for each type of zoning compared with those commonly used in existing office planning. (Results) While it was possible to classify entire plans of each case into four zoning types as a result of the case study, it was difficult to classify these perfectly due to the inability to search the real environments of companies. Among the four types of zoning, the type that should be considered in office planning is open-individual space because the guarantee of personal space contributes significantly to the satisfaction of the work environment. In addition, the concentration-individual space?which can be easily overlooked in the office?is organized as an essential zoning model within an autonomous office where zoning is performed according to the type of work environment chosen by individual preference. (Conclusions) The zoning result of the autonomous office was not much different to what we are currently working with. Ultimately, the most important thing for an office to improve work efficiency and productivity, is the company's efforts in giving employees autonomy. I hope that autonomous offices in Korea will be easily accessible in the future, and that this study will be utilized as basic data. |
