This research is on the architectural design competitions for 5 new middle schools that were recently held in Multi-functional administrative city, South Korea. The purpose of research is to offer useful data to the related by extracting characteristics of architectural design through mutual comparison among 5 prize-winning pieces. This empirical research started with an interest in public building(especially educational facilities), after completing the related evaluation services as a person in charge. First of all, the characteristics of each prize-winning piece were considered dividing them into 2 parts.(One is professional field of the jury and the other is evaluation item within the competition guidelines.) And then, the characteristics of each architectural design were throughly examined through of site-plan, plans, elevations and other specialized plans in order to find out the characteristics in common. In site-plans, strong efforts to link natural elements with city, obeying District Unit Planning, have been glimpsed and in plans, not only the characteristics of subject classroom system but also creative spatial composition based on the home base was especially worthy of notice. In elevations, the images inferred from Geumgang River and/or surrounding mountains used to be adopted as design motifs. At the end, in other specialized plans, various attempts to create safer educational environment by CPTED(crime prevention through environmental design) have also been witnessed. |
