(Background and Purpose) Korea possesses marine environmental values and strength in the form of a peninsula surrounded by the sea on three sides. Its history that has developed along the sea is highly appreciated, and it has become one of nations with the top 10 marine industries worldwide today. Whale resources have contributed to the development of human history and civilization as the greatest living organisms in the history of the earth. Unfortunately, over the past few centuries, there has been a dramatic decline in the number of whales in the ocean, leaving a symbolic lesson about the importance of the active conservation of wildlife resources. Currently, many marine exhibits are being constructed and operated in Korea, but there are not enough pavilions to show the marine ecosystems that are connected with whales. The purpose of this study is to analyze the exhibition presentation technique through analyzing the present situation of the marine ecosystem related to the whale. This research will be used as basic material for the field of exhibition production in the future. (Method) This study was conducted to analyze the current status of three whale-watching venues in Korea, including the Whale Museum in Jangbugo, the Whale Ecology Experience Center, and the National Marine Biological Resource Center. The analysis of the present situation was reclassified according to the purpose of this study based on the classifications of the exhibition directing techniques collected through theoretical review and previous research analysis and analysis of the application rate of the exhibition hall. (Results) Based on the theoretical review and previous research, we analyzed the present situation of the surveyed museum in terms of six classified presentation techniques: physical display, model display, restored exhibition display, exhibition panels, and exhibition experience. On average, the rate of application for video display and exhibition experience was high. However, depending on the nature of the institution, we could confirm the different methods of exhibition on the same topic, and further research is needed for various exhibition halls with the same theme. (Conclusions) In this study, the application rate of exhibition directing techniques is examined so that the content of the exhibition, which could be fragmentary, is effectively applied to the content transmission through the combination of various media. |
