¿ä¾à2 (Background and Purpose) There is a kind of uncomfortableness in seeing Alvaro Siza's plans. The reason is mainly the non-orthogonal and irregular plans, which are not commonly applied by other architects. By analyzing the background and contents of the characteristic and deformed geometry, we can understand a part of Siza's architecture. The background of the irregular plan consists of mainly irregular Portuguese urban structure, drawing experiences, geometric compositions, and transformation. While Siza's works have been interpreted and analyzed in different ways, this study on the irregular form and composition is another effective way to find the essence of Siza's architecture. (Method) First of all, the elements which had influenced the irregularity of Siza's architecture were clearly identified. Second, the formal types of 103 works of the architect were analyzed. Since there are vast cases and types, it is very hard to contain all of them in this study. So, the scope of this research was limited to the forms and plan compositions by straight lines. Meanwhile, another research concerning forms and plan compositions by curved lines is currently under way. Third, to analyze the characteristics of the composition principles, various cases were categorized by composition type. Finally, based on the results of the analysis, the interrelationships between types and plan compositions were presented. (Results) The analysis derived the following correlations according to type of irregular forms and plan compositions. First, Siza organizes plans by using the trapezoid form to avoid orthogonal plans and to create variation in irregular compositions. Second, the compositions become more complicated by the addition of seven triangular types dragged out of quadrangles, and this point is one of the most important and original discoveries of this study. Third, the inter-penetration of small mass into the main mass, and trimming corners is used to enforce the compositional characteristics. Fourth, in the plan composition, Siza tends to break the symmetry using various composition types even if the basic form is symmetrical. Furthermore, in the recent works, as the scale of buildings grow and the programs vary, plan compositions become more complex. (Conclusion) After the categorization and analysis of Siza's works concerning irregular plans, this study clearly demonstrated that the details and nuances of the delicate form and composition of irregular plans of Siza's architecture. With another study on the forms and plans by curved lines, the essence of Siza's works will be fully understood
