(Background and Purpose) Exhibition is often designed to stimulate psychology of the audience to convey the theme and contents. Persona or space decorated for production of excessive concepts and images sometimes causes repulsion from the unconsciousness of users of exhibition space. Exhibition space is designed as a space containing comprehensive space value, rather than masculine space or feminine space, and needs to be a bisexual existence respecting various independent tendencies of members of contemporary society. Carl Gustav Jung dealt with inherent characteristics and unconsciousness on an equal basis. The archetype of unconsciousness postulated by Carl Gustav Jung represents a theory applicable to objects and space, transcending the personality, and presents direction for better space value. (Method) This study examines the theory of archetype of unconsciousness postulated by Carl Gustav Jung, and on that basis, investigated the exhibition space value from the perspective of social phenomenology. We considered that Carl Gustav Jung's Anima and Animus theory would not be simply projected onto personality, but could be projected onto space, and furthermore, looked into relationship of archetype between unconsciousness and components of exhibition space presentation. On that basis, the study presented direction for space blending masculinity and femininity harmoniously by considering the space where both masculinity and femininity were emphasized and visual characteristics of opposite sexes in such space with harmonious existence of masculinity and femininity. (Results) For the cases of Anima exhibition space, the study identified spatial characteristics showing femininity internally although the space had masculine persona. Through that, users of space were found to feel comfort and familiarity internally. Meanwhile, Animus exhibition space, of which cases usually had feminine persona, revealed spatial characteristics showing masculinity internally. The results of our case study showed that exhibition space which could complement spatial characteristics of opposite sexes would have value as alternative space. (Conclusions) Self-realization mentioned by Carl Gustav Jung represents holistic spirituality combining individual consciousness and unconsciousness and also represents realization of individuality in true sense. Such perspective is projected onto exhibition space design, as well as individual personality. Space would need to be designed to present direction enabling experience of intrinsic internal essence of space which can complement individual persona of space configuration through exhibition space design that takes the archetype of unconsciousness postulated by Carl Gustav Jung in to consideration. |
