(Background and Purpose) The window display is a design area for use in social, cultural, and environmental spaces, as visual elements are displayed for communicating with the public. This study provides suggestions for expanding show windows on the street to enable easy access to cultural spaces by consumers. Consumers have needs for fun and playful times to evoke exciting and fantastic feelings, as well as psychological needs for branching out beyond their realities to rejuvenate, enjoy a sense of freedom, and collect new information. That is, today's consumers seek "fun" lifestyles. From the aspects of space, fun is an element stimulating one's emotions, meaning that participants can interact with each other. That is, fun stimulates curiosity, diversity, creativity, and dynamic style by providing people with direct experiences that exercise their five senses. In this regard, this study identifies the nature of the concept of "playful" by analyzing the expressions in display windows using fun according to the following categories: use of objects and use of art. The purpose of methods for expressing fun in window displays is to allow people to experience street culture by forming a consensus and understanding cultural approaches. (Research methods) This study focuses on window display cases using fun elements and categories for the analysis of form, color, material, and techniques used in designing display cases. The characteristics of fun can be classified as curiosity, stimulated imagination, picturesque stimulation, and emotion. When fun is used in window displays, a non-daily concept is introduced to extend the human experience, make people think outside the box, and stretch thinking patterns. Fun designs provide artistic elements and combined objects through visual effects such as exaggeration, distortion, transformation, and color for a vivid and playful experience. In this study, future directions in design are suggested with a view toward window displays that will influence cultural values based on the abovementioned characteristics and expressions. (Conclusion) The emphasis on fun in window displays reflects creativity through new visuals and imaginative presentations, thereby arousing a positive reaction from consumers for window displays that differ from conventional ones. Such creativity expressed through the medium of art evokes emotions and feelings, including romanticism and fantasy. A connection to playful elements that emphasize new and fun experiences reflects thinking that is outside the box, thereby increasing design value and maximizing consumers' psychological satisfaction. This scenario also extends the expression realm of design, and contributes to the development of a street culture by providing extended cultural space for the public. |
