(Background and Purpose) Play is the most important part of children's lives. They develop both physically and emotionally through play. However, children's playgrounds currently have uniform facilities that make it hard for kids to develop their imagination and creativity; therefore, outdoor playgrounds where features of children's play are adopted, are needed. (Method) This study has researched the concept and features of children's play, along with the basic conditions, roles, and types of playgrounds, and then investigated and analyzed playgrounds in Korea and overseas. The case study showed that Korean playgrounds have many different elements and various colors, while those in foreign countries are a step ahead with regard to creativity-raising elements. (Results) Children need a place to develop their physical, emotional, and social skills as well as their imagination and creativity through free activities. It is necessary to depart from the stereotypical play facilities, and offer children a place where the important aspects of children's play are adopted so they can have a wider experience and learn properly in a safe, pleasant environment. |
