Interior color scheme can be environmental affordances for spatial orientation with the color contrast. This study examines the influence of color scheme and color differentiation of zones on spatial cognition by experiencing virtual environment. Based on color harmony theory, three different color schemes(monochromatic, adjacent, complementary) were applied to three different plan configurations('T' type, Triangle, parallelogram) of general hospital which are divided into two wards. Monochromatic color scheme was applied identically and adjacent and complementary color scheme were applied differently to two zones. Participants(N=78) performed two kinds of spatial cognition task after watching walk-through movie clip and glimpse of a floor map. First task was coarse spatial cognition, participants were asked to select the correct zone in the floor map of a specific perspective scene. In this task, adjacent and complementary color scheme showed better performance than in monochromatic scheme with significant difference in 'T' type only. Second task was fine spatial cognition, participants were asked to select the correct viewpoint(position and orientation) in a partial plan of a specific perspective. In this task, two symmetrical types showed significant mean difference. In 'T' plan, monochromatic scheme showed better performance than adjacent or complementary color scheme, with significant mean difference. In triangular plan, monochromatic and complementary scheme showed better performance than adjacent color scheme with significant mean difference. This result indicates that color schemes are useful restrictively in symmetrical plan. It seems that spatial color information is stored after physical structure as a mental representation of space. Additionally, high visibility within structure enhances the effectiveness of color scheme, and high contrast combination helps fine spatial cognition. |
