Despite the building information model (BIM) based CAD systems for systematically handling building information required in the entire life cycle of buildings emerged, these systems still lack the architectural planning function for design and decision support. Therefore, this study proposes the possibility that the newly developed model under the influence of space syntax theory, point-based angular analysis (PAA) for spatial analysis of urban street networks can be used to evaluate architectural design alternatives in a CAD process. To do this, the study constructed the algorithms to examine consecutive nodes on a circulation network in a building and to calculate mean depth (MD) of each space by considering turning angles of path segments connecting nodes and distances among the nodes in the network. Practicability of these algorithms was validated by the development and execution of the computer program called "J-Studio for Spatial Analysis" (J-SSA). The results analyzed by the program has exemplified that the MDs calculated through PAA on architectural spaces can be measures to identify social and functional properties of the spaces on the basis of accessibility, visibility, and centrality. It is expected that methodology proposed in the study will be used as available tool that can evaluate the alternatives and inform a designer about the spatial configuration features of a building in a CAD process. |
