Single households currently face problems in communicating with neighbors, and in dealing with loneliness, which draws attention to a need in a new type of housing. This study explores the possibility of applying the concept of urban co-housing through the studying the similar cases for current single households. Surveys were done with single households, to study their thoughts on co-housing, residential preferences and design elements for the purpose of proposing a new plan for urban co-housing aimed at single households. As a result, design process of urban co-housing for single households are as follows. 1) Communal space should be planned so that all the residents are able to access it easily, and the flow plan should consider the characteristics and physical drawbacks. Also it should include environemental elements such as gardens to induce the resident to form a community. 2) Communal spaces should be designed not to interfere with the privacy of the residents. 3) Most of the respondents preferred a small community, so space planning should be focused on small spacing. 4) Facilities such as public bulletin boards can lead to seamless communication. 5) There should be a representative for each floor for a smooth operation and management of residents and an administrator who manages the representatives. 6) Current single householders put most value in communication and cooperation with others, but also have a need for absolute guarantee of personal space and privacy. |
