The social function and the social role of a library as a public organization have been changing throughout the ages, and they tend to be diversified depending on the size and purpose of the library. In particular, small libraries have had the purposes and directions to activate small communities, which are different from those of general public libraries. Recent increase of small libraries reflects the fact that social significance for the small scale communities has been growing, and various studies in library information science field reveal this social demand. However, space planning research of small libraries is still on its modest level, even though overcoming their limits of the physical environment is a critical issue. Therefore, this research analyzes current status and requirements of small libraries through on-site interviews. The research also provides basic guidance and directions to be examined for space planning of small libraries. This study can be summarized as follows: ¨ç Securing space utilization pursuant to the library's operation hour; ¨è Space organization pertaining to the diversity of users; ¨é Reviewing the space and equipment considering efficiency of space management; ¨ê Securing variability of space utilization and furniture arrangement for the accommodation of various activity programs; ¨ë Designing the space to create a comforting atmosphere; ¨ì Providing various types of service spaces considering the using properties of users. |
