Amid the growing importance of urban designs to make cities safer, Busan Metropolitan City, South Korea, selected four residential areas for "Busan's Safe Community Project"?Gupo 2-dong, Gamcheon 2-dong, Mora 1-dong, and Nambumin 2-dong?and applied Crime Prevention through Environmental Design (CPTED) to them. The purpose of this paper is to investigate the effects of CPTED on residential satisfaction, fear of crime and sense of attachment, and to provide implications for CPTED policies. Hypotheses were proposed to test whether CPTED would have a positive effect on residential satisfaction, fear of crime and sense of attachment, and to identify the degree to which CPTED would affect dependent variables among the areas. A survey was conducted through questionnaires, and data was analyzed using frequency analysis and analysis of variance (ANOVA), respectively. The survey results showed CPTED had significant effects on residential satisfaction, fear of crime and sense of attachment in all four areas. The results also found that there were significant effects on all the items, but differences in the averages of areas. Nambumin 2-dong identified a considerable increase in residential satisfaction, fear reduction and sense of attachment, whereas Gupo 2-dong and Mora 1-dong had comparatively low levels in the items. The difference suggests that active strategies, such as natural surveillance and natural access control, have reduced the risk of crime for residents¡ªrather than budget-based passive strategies. With the application of CPTED to old residential areas exposed to the risk of crime but lacking in studies, this paper explored the effects of CPTED on residents' perception, including residential satisfaction, and suggested policy implications. However, given its limited statistical approach of using questionnaires, there is a need for further study on the fear of crime and the incidence of crime to ensure the validity of the case study. |
