The Ganghwa Anglican Church was built by the Anglican Domain of England in 1900 at Ganghwa-eup, Ganghwa Island. It was designated as Historic Site No.424 of Korea in 2001. Since the 1980s, some studies have widely viewed the Church as an outstanding architectural case of indigenization. Yet, the previous findings were largely grounded on lesser positive information, specifically with regards to its construction process. This research investigates its construction process through the historical documents from the Sungkonghoe University Library. The documents, except photographs, have not been reported. This paper aims to clarify and re-examine the architectural characteristics and meanings of the Ganghwa Anglican Church. |
