The purpose of this study is to offer improvement directions for a guideline on a district unit plan to preserve historic buildings by reviewing urban planning measures, architectural actions, and controversies, all of those related to the preservation of historic buildings in the Insa-dong district. Looking at the matters, First, the unique characteristics of the preserved buildings were undermined, and the direct causes of this phenomenon were a lack of detailed classifications of the elements preserving their exterior, drawings or records, and so on. Second, when expanding the preserved buildings, only the front three sides were preserved, thereby resulting in damage to their original forms. Although there was an attempt to restore them to their original forms afterward, they were damaged during the attempt. Therefore, when establishing or reorganizing the district unit plan in the future, the improvement directions for preserving historic buildings can be summarized as follows. First, detailed information should be delivered by providing an administrative guideline for each element, drawings, pictures of the present condition, and so on. Second, when preserving historic buildings by following the guideline, their original forms should be maintained. Third, procedures (e.g. participation of experts, preparation of maintenance plans, etc.) should be added when maintaining/managing historic buildings after preservation by the district unit plan. |
