Augmented reality (AR) provides useful information in real time that can guide users¡¯current states. It works by overlapping virtual world information onto real world environment. It generally extracts real world information from video streams using image processing or computer vision technologies and look up the virtual information that matches with the extracted real world information. The matched information is finally visualized in such a way that users can better understand the real world states. AR is considered as one of the primary technologies that will transform the future world. Continuous growths of ICT (Information and Communication Technology) including mobile devices and wireless communication have diversified the AR applications and increased the AR usage. AR has drawn growing interests from construction industry as mobile devices and BIM are utilized increasingly in large projects. The AR applications in construction have focused on efficient processes of construction inspection and maintenance. The introduction of AR will create great opportunities to make more practical use of BIM. This paper will review several BIM-based AR applications and discuss about the future of AR in construction. |
