This study is to describe and analyse changing position and meaning of surface in architecture. For this purpose this paper first deal with the problem between structure and surface. The relationship between the two is from cause and effect to arbitrary is evident in contemporary architecture. And then analysis of the surface of Mies and Herzog and de Meolon shows the transition from representational surface to presentational surface. This phenomena has fundamental meaning about surface in architecture. It changes the position of surface from the additional and decorative to self confidential element. It also has deep socio-cultural meaning. The unbearable of lightness of being is also same in comtemporary architecture. Even It changes the traditional definition and cognition of architecture because it reverse the essence of architecture and the importance of design in architecture. |
