Zollverein Coal Mine Industrial complex in the city of Essen, Germany once had contributed to the economic success of Germany, called the miracle of the Rhine, in the mid-20th century; however, it started to cause numerous problems since it went downhill and turned into a collapsed coal mine due to the worldwide changes in industrial structures. To address these problems, a master plan for Zollverein reconstruction was established, and the coal mine city eventually witnessed a rebirth of itself with completely different nature through this effort. There have been a number of attempts made to graft modern interpretation to existing buildings and facilities including coal washing plant, boiler house and winding tower while preserving the exterior and interior of them, and these attempts resulted in producing new symbols in Zollverein. Spaces that have turned into museums have induced new ways of exhibitions by grafting exhibits into existing facilities. This can be a great example of using industrial heritage as a cultural space to preserve historical values and identities through an in-depth plan and effort. Among all the efforts that have been made, this study aims to contemplate on a case of Ruhr Museum. It is designed to offer the basis of value judgment on the master plan for Zollverein reconstruction by analyzing a part of the master plan. |
