The Children's Museum is a typical non-formal educational institution which takes the characteristics of children's growth into account and provides them with various experiences and learning chances. In spite of its short history, the Children's Museum made a quantum leap in terms of size. But now is the time for it to enhance its quality and the necessity for further study on it is getting more attention. Taking this into consideration, this researcher paid attention to exhibition process which can induce various cognitive capability of spectators and bring them diverse experiences, and came to conclusion that the mutual interaction between exhibiting items and the companions is the quint essential part of exhibition for children. As prerequisite researches were carried out, the need for the new classification of exhibitions through hands-on experience arose and its basis was sought through play concept. The existing classification method in use is media focused and is considered to be inappropriate for the complete classification of the exhibitions of Children's Museum due to its ambiguity. It is because, basically, play concept is latent in the exhibition for children and children's play and museum visitation show behavioral similarities. As the outcome of this research, through the theoretical study on children's play, the classification framework for plays was derived and by applying this to the situation of the museum, the exhibition items for the Children's Museum were classified systematically. Also through the study on exhibition items which were already on display, the effectiveness and the pertinence of new classification method was confirmed. |
