Since the Industrial Revolution, Europe experienced a rapid population increase in cities, as well as the problem of a poor residential environment and a housing shortage. This study investigate various urban housing types, which appeared in many countries in Europe, in order to resolve such residential problems. In particular, it focuses on superblock-type of residential complexes for workers, which were constructed after the First World War by the socialist government in Vienna, Austria. This period is called the "Red Vienna" period.
