A new type of multi-family houses with pilotis for parking have changed the street environment of multi-family housing areas, and such changes are worried to influence the quality of the street environment that pedestrians perceive. In particular, this study examined pedestrians' fear of crimes and car accidents in the street environment shaped by concentrated multi-family houses with pilotis. For this study, a multi-family housing area in Jamsil Bon-dong, Seoul was selected as a case. The case study was conducted through morphological analysis and field trips of the streets environment. The results confirm the influence of the street environment shaped by the pilotis on pedestrians' fear of crimes and car accidents. Especially, the darkness of piloti areas mainly influenced pedestrians' fear of crimes while the difficulty of perceiving cars coming out of the pilotis influenced pedestrians' fear of car accidents rather than cars passing through the streets with high speed. Such results from this study are expected to contribute to the improvement of the street environment in multi-family housing area. |
