This study aims to identify spatial distribution characteristics and location factors of social enterprises(SEs) in Korea. Specifically, we confirm that SEs are unevenly distributed across municipalities depending upon location factors that affect the demand and supply. As hybrid organizations between profit and non-profit organizations, SEs share both organizations' location factors. Therefore, the location factors for SEs are derived from theories on those organizations' location. Since the number of SEs is distributed as count data, we employed for an empirical study Poisson and Negative Binomial regression models for SEs certified by the Ministry of Employment and Labor as of December 2011. The results suggest that supply factors such as land rent, production network, and market competition determine SEs' location more significantly than demand factors. This implies that SEs in Korea fails to fulfil the expectation that SEs should be located in regions with those in need for social services, and that policy measures may be needed to remedy this. |
