¿ä¾à2 This study aims to provide the preliminary data which can be used as reference materials at the design phase by analysing thermal and economic optimality of insulation in multi-family housings. It is obtained by investigating the present conditions of the passive house technology in European countries and the construction of building envelope which is largely used nowadays through a survey of local practicing professionals in the small-sized architectural design firms. The research results are as follows: Firstly, it was effective to improve performance of all kinds of insulations without extra cost in building envelope. although the roof and lowest floor required a longer payback period than an outer wall but increase of insulating material performance with the application of bead-type insulating materials was more effective. Secondly, although payback period is long on the roof and in the lowest floor, it is considered that the outer wall can offset payback because of its application area in building envelope and then when energy saving is considered in the outer wall, increase of insulating material performance on the roof and in the lowest floor will be more effective
