In the late 1950s, a trend of architecture, so-called 'post-modern' developed differently from the early modern architecture, which was a phenomenon after the dissolution of C.I.A.M (Congress International Architecture Modern). Especially, after the end of World War ¥±, America craved another new aspects by a lot of the capitals, technologies and developments of Industry. That is to say, they criticized some problems of monolithic urban architecture by International Style, and aspects to uncritically pursue only a style without consideration of the 'spirit' of the early modern architecture. Thus, they had tried a variety of architecture to recover a lost identity, and called these attempts 'Post-modernism.' This study is to evaluate characteristics in the architecture of post-modernism which occurred particularly in certain areas of the United States. For this purpose, this study selects three architects who is well-known as the representative architects of post-modernism in the United States; Robert Venturi, Robert Stern and Michael Graves. Then, this study investigates the common design elements and their characteristics in post-modern architecture. Through this analysis of classification of the four elements ? Historic picturesqueness, Eclectic, Geometric elements, Collage, this study finally draws a conclusion. |
