The purpose of this study is to analyze the change of media characteristics application on the exterior design of EXPO pavilion based on the related communication model as media. Moreover, its' purpose is to consider the role and changing ideals of 'media' with the EXPO pavilion design. As a result of case studies, the messages that represented by the exterior design of EXPO pavilion are classified as the expression of cultural factors, technological developments, internal layout of the pavilion, and symbolic meanings. Also, the ways of the design approach for the exterior design of EXPO pavilion as 'media' are classified into two different axes: 'skin vs. mass' and 'non-interactive vs. interactive'. Mainly the changing ideals of 'media' with the EXPO pavilion design are transformed by introducing the concept of 'skin', 'double skin', and 'digital skin' to the architecture. The roles of these concepts for the skin design are classified as fixed analog system, non-material system, image reflecting system, image creating system, virtual information system, and interactive media system. And it is expected to introduce continually the integrated digital skin to the exterior of EXPO pavilion as the media channel. |
