This research intends to identify the New Architecture of Rem Koolhaas applied in ZKM by analyzing the design process and architectural characteristics through the concept of Bigness. Analysis results indicated that among totally 8 items extracted from Bigness, 7 items, ‘place of enjoyment that overlapped complex program', ‘configuration of independent parts that are dedicated for all', ‘various architectural expression of independent parts', ‘separation of inside and facade', ‘facade as an object', ‘form where size impact is transmitted effectively' and ‘architecture not related with urban, local context', were fully applied to ZKM. In case of ‘new method based on mechanical connection' which is not applied, it is identified that Rem Koolhaas thought of elevator's role as the potential to change existing architectural method, but is recognized as impracticable area. Such results means that Rem Koolhaas took the concept of Bigness that can be applied in practice as new type of architectural model that he himself pursued by applying it all to ZKM. |
